Creating a sanctuary that nurtures both your body and spirit involves more than just aesthetics, it’s about cultivating and environment free from harmful toxins and negative influences.
Being intentional with making a non-toxic home is a beautiful journey of self-care and empowerment, one that unfolds one step at a time.
Here’s how Miriam, Co-founder of LHW, embarked on this transformative path, and how you can too, without feeling overwhelmed. This is a beginner’s guide, focusing more on the process and less on the nitty-gritty of each toxin:
“Remember, transitioning to a cleaner home doesn’t have to be overnight, you may start by replacing one product at a time. It also helped that I had friends who were on the same journey so we could exchange knowledge and tips to swap products, I hope our community can provide you with the same sense of togetherness ♥️”
Step 1: Getting to know your toxins
My journey began with educating myself about common toxins and understanding what lurks beneath the surfaces. Without scaring you and going into too many details about scary hidden toxins, I did start by identifying potentially harmful substances, like VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and formaldehyde, which is surprisingly common in homes. The awareness surely hit hard, but it was also necessary to urge a shift towards safer alternatives and make better informed decisions moving forward.
Step 2: Purging the plastics
As I delved deeper, the plastics issue became apparent – especially those containing BPA and phthalates, which are known endocrine disruptors. Transitioning to glass and stainless steel wasn’t just a choice; it became a necessity for a cleaner lifestyle. My kitchen needed a thorough detox here. Non-stick cookware was replaced with cast iron and ceramic options. Storing food in glass containers ensured that no harmful chemicals leached into what we eat – a small but powerful change towards a healthier life.
Step 3: Cleaning up your cleaning act
Cleaning products were next. Swapping out those bottles filled with harsh chemicals for natural cleaners like vinegar, baking soda, or even purchasing products with the EPA’s Safer Choice label made a tangible difference. This simple switch not only reduced toxins but also brought peace of mind, knowing that my home was safe for myself and my loved ones.
Step 4: Reevaluating your laundry detergents
Switching my laundry detergent was a pivotal step. I moved away from conventional detergents, which often contain allergens and endocrine disruptors, to greener alternatives. Look for products with a short ingredient list and free from fragrances and dyes. It’s a simple change that significantly reduces your skin’s exposure to harmful chemicals
Step 5: Improving indoor air quality
Improving the air quality inside my home involved several changes. As my daughter was dealing with asthma, I invested in a high-quality air purifier helped, especially as I live in an area that requires constant air conditioning. Regular maintenance and cleaning of AC filters became a new routine to ensure the system wasn’t circulating dust and allergens. You may also introduce air-purifying plants like spider plants and peace lilies, which naturally remove toxins from the air.
Step 6: Freshening up, but naturally
I used to adore scented candles and air fresheners until I discovered they were sources of synthetic fragrances and other chemicals. I opted for essential oil diffusers and beeswax candles instead, which provide a natural aroma and help in reducing indoor air pollutants.
Step 7: Embracing organic and natural fabrics
Replacing synthetic textiles with organic cotton and natural fibers throughout my home, from the linen in my bedroom to the towels in my bathroom, was transformative. These materials are not only safer but also significantly more sustainable.
Step 8: Continuous learning and adaptation
The final step is ongoing. Staying informed and adaptable allows me to continuously refine my environment. Whether it’s upgrading to an organic mattress or introducing new non-toxic cookware, each decision is a step towards a healthier future.
This journey isn’t just about removing toxins; it’s about creating a space that reflects my commitment to health and sustainability. I’m not perfect (e.g. I still must learn a lot about my make-up and clean skin routine).
But for now, it’s a testament to the belief that when we care deeply about our surroundings, we not only improve our health but also contribute positively to our world.
