That moment has a name. It is your follicular phase.
That changes today.
First, let’s get clear on what we’re actually talking about
And when estrogen rises, a lot of things move with it.
Research shows estrogen levels can climb from under 50 pg/mL in the early follicular phase to between 150 and 750 pg/mL just before ovulation. That is not a subtle change. It is your body flooding your system with a hormone that directly talks to your brain, your mood, your motivation and your metabolism.
Estrogen boosts serotonin production, improving mood and reducing anxiety, while also enhancing cognitive function, particularly verbal memory and processing speed.
Processing speed. Verbal memory. Mood stability. Less anxiety.
This is your body handing you a cheat code. Every. Single. Month.
The brain science that will make you rethink everything
In a first-of-its-kind 2024 study published in NPJ Women’s Health, researchers scanned the brains of 60 healthy, naturally cycling women at three key phases of their cycle. They focused on what they called “dynamical complexity” – a measure of how flexible and interconnected brain activity is. Higher complexity means a more adaptive, more responsive brain.
The pre-ovulatory phase won. By a significant margin.
Estrogen boosts network complexity, flexibility and outward-facing cognition, while progesterone, which dominates later in the cycle, supports inward focus, emotion processing and social reflection.
Two completely different modes. Both valuable. Both real.
But only one of them is designed for external output, bold decisions and being seen. And that one is the follicular phase.
What this actually looks like in your real life
Research found significant increases in friendliness, cheerfulness, concentration and energy during the late follicular phase, alongside measurable decreases in anxiety, depression, fatigue and hostility.
That week where you felt like yourself again? That was not a fluke.
A 2025 study found that women in the late follicular phase approached positive stimuli more quickly and with less cognitive effort, meaning your brain is literally more willing and more able to go after what it wants during this phase.
Less resistance. More momentum. Not because you finally got your life together.
So what do you actually do with this information?
You would not plant seeds and harvest on the same day. Your energy works the same way.
The follicular phase is your planting season, your planning season, your say yes to things season. Here is how to use it:
In your work: Pitch the idea. Ask for the meeting. Start the thing you have been quietly thinking about for months. Your verbal fluency is higher, your risk tolerance is slightly elevated, and your brain is wired for connection and outward momentum. Use it before the window closes.
In your body: This is the phase where high-intensity movement feels good because your body can handle it. Try something new. Go harder. Your recovery is faster and your motivation is not something you have to manufacture.
In your relationships: You will find it easier to communicate, easier to be open, easier to show up fully. Say the thing. Have the conversation. Let people in.
In your creativity: Your brain is in its most flexible, most connected state. Do not use this window for admin. Use it to create, brainstorm, and think in ways you genuinely cannot access in the weeks that follow.
The part that nobody is saying out loud
And when you cannot deliver that – when you hit a wall and cannot figure out why – you decide something is wrong with you.
There is nothing wrong with you.
Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle meaningfully impact performance on tasks requiring memory, attention, and cognitive processing speed. This is not a weakness. It is a feature of female biology that science is only just beginning to fully map.
The follicular phase is proof that your body is not working against you. It has been trying to support you this entire time.
You just needed someone to tell you how to listen.
Start paying attention this month. Notice when the fog lifts. Notice when ideas come easily. Notice when you feel like her.
That is your follicular phase saying hello. Write it down. Plan around it. Let it carry you.
Love,
